Skeletor's origins have shifted across different stories. He was originally described as a demonic warlord from another dimension, transported to Eternia during "The Great Wars" when a hole opened in the dimensional wall. He seeks to reopen that rift so his race can invade and conquer Eternia. Later stories provided his origin as Keldor, the former apprentice of Hordak and the older half-brother of He-Man's father, King Randor. Denied rulership of Eternia for being half-demon, Keldor attempted to seize the throne by force but his face was damaged by acid during a confrontation with Randor; the resulting disfigurement drove him insane and led to his transformation into Skeletor. In the 2002 series, Keldor was mortally injured after being splashed in the face with acid during a fight with Randor, and Evil-Lyn took him to Hordak's sanctuary, where Hordak transformed him into Skeletor. In the Masters of the Universe Classics toyline, he is Randor's half-brother whose mother was a member of the Gar race; after battling Randor and losing, he turned to Hordak to survive and was merged with an entity known as the Demo-Man, becoming Skeletor.

In Their Own Story

In the 1987 live-action film, Skeletor conquers Eternia, captures Castle Grayskull, and absorbs the power of the Great Eye to transform into a golden demonic god, but He-Man throws him off a cliff into a vat. In a post-credits scene, Skeletor emerges from the vat and proclaims that he will return. In the Filmation series, Skeletor was a former pupil of Hordak who was left behind on Eternia when Hordak escaped to Etheria with Adora through a dimensional portal. Skeletor set about raising an army of his own, becoming ruler of Snake Mountain, and seeks to conquer Castle Grayskull and take revenge on Hordak. In *The New Adventures of He-Man*, Skeletor tricks the Galactic Guardians into believing he is good, is transported to the planet Primus, and allies with the mutant leader Flogg to conquer Primus in exchange for help destroying He-Man. In the 2002 series, Skeletor (formerly Keldor) attacks the Hall of Wisdom, fights Randor, and is transformed by Hordak after being splashed with acid. He later destroys Hordak's sanctuary to prevent Hordak from returning, wanting Eternia for himself.
